Successful stakeholder engagement is a key component to our success. This role will lead the organisation’s Stakeholder Engagement and Public Affairs function, proactively engaging with key partners and stakeholders across the region and nationally, enabling the organisation to support collaboration and delivery, and to tell a consistent, powerful compelling story with key audiences about the WMCA’s priorities, influence, and impact.

What will you be doing?

• Develop and deliver innovative, creative, and effective public affairs and stakeholder engagement strategies, plans, and frameworks to support the WMCA strategic leadership team and the Mayor of the West Midlands
• Develop robust planning, mapping, monitoring, and evaluation frameworks to deliver a ‘one organisation’ understanding and approach to the delivery of partner and stakeholder engagement at regional and national levels
• Support the strategic leadership team as they forge strong and active partnerships with all local, regional and national politicians, political advisers, civil servants, non-departmental public bodies, business groups, regulators and other interested stakeholder organisations to deliver the region’s priorities
• Drive new and innovative approaches to the delivery of public affairs, stakeholder engagement and relationship management ensuring that stakeholder and partner intelligence informs the approach to engagement and lobbying
• Lead on the development, implementation and co-ordination of key stakeholder and partner engagement and public affairs activity
• Lead and manage the day-to-day duties of the public affairs and stakeholder engagement team
• Support the Chief Executive, Head of the Chief Executive’s Office, Head of Strategic Communications, and the Mayor’s Office to maintain effective working relationships and engagement with constituent and non-constituent members
• Work with regional and national partners to identify and adopt best practice in the delivery of public affairs, stakeholder engagement and relationship management, developing and leading regional networks of communities of practice

About you

We’re looking for someone with heaps of public affairs and stakeholder engagement experience, gained at a senior level. Someone who can develop public affairs and stakeholder engagement strategies in a political environment. Someone with the persuasion and influencing skills needed to command attention and influence business professionals at an Executive/Director level.

With a strong academic profile, including a degree-level education in a relevant subject, you’ll have membership of an appropriate professional body and be able to evidence a real commitment to ongoing professional development. We’re looking for someone who has experience of dealing with consultancies at a senior level, has experience of developing business strategies and plans, and who has detailed knowledge of all aspects of public affairs and stakeholder engagement, stakeholder mapping, frameworks development, and effective monitoring and evaluation.

Your proven track record of developing, leading, and motivating a multi-functional team, with highly developed people management skills and the ability to work well with interdepartmental teams, will stand you in good stead.

About the team

Operating at the heart of the organisation, the Chief Executive’s Office provides strategic advice, corporate grip, and coordination to support the executive leadership of the West Midlands Combined Authority, enabling a ‘one organisation’ culture and promoting a positive external reputation and influence. It is a small, multi-functional team that provides important enabling and support functions including internal communications, equalities and inclusion, and stakeholder management. We work corporately across the organisation and closely with the Mayor’s Office, Governance, Communications, and Organisational Development.
